Microturbine Technology

The Capstone Microturbine

Capstone power generation solutions help to improve operations by putting the end-user in control of their energy costs. Advanced engineering and more than 100 patents put Capstone microturbines in a class of their own. By integrating an aero-based turbine engine, a magnetic generator, advanced power electronics, with patented air bearing technology, Capstone microturbines are the ideal solution for today's distributed energy needs.

Capstone Microturbines operate on a variety of fuels, including natural gas, associated gas, biogas, LPG/propane, flare gas, landfill gas, renewable natural gas (RNG) and hydrogen fuel blends. In resource recovery applications, microturbines burn waste gases that would otherwise be flared or released directly into the atmosphere.

Capstone microturbines feature low maintenance air bearing technology, the lowest emissions of any non-catalyzed gas combustion engine, and digital power conversion to stand as the optimal power generation solution.

The ability to operate on a wide variety of fuels makes our microturbines stand out as a robust source of clean power.

Capstone microturbines can be installed individually or in a “multi-pack” configuration and function in parallel with or independently from the local power grid. Our microturbines are compact, quiet and lightweight and provide reliable energy when and where it's needed.

Capstone Hydrogen Development

As a thought-leader in the energy sector Capstone recognized years ago that hydrogen would play an important role as a key part of the future of renewable, green energy landscape. Hydrogen microturbines are the perfect complement for the intermittent nature of wind and solar power, making them an ideal component of the modern clean and green microgrid. When wind and solar energy production exceeds demand, excess energy can be used in the production of storable renewable hydrogen energy. Stored hydrogen provides a convenient high-density fuel source and can then be used as carbon-free fuel for Capstone’s microturbines. Microturbines benefit from immediate use as a decentralized energy source, located where hydrogen can be produced and stored locally.

Through long-standing federal, university, and international research partnerships, Capstone has patented technology for the use of hydrogen and works closely with these agencies to assure a clean energy future. We continue to explore the ever-changing energy landscape for complementary partners, technologies, and applications that enables carbon reduction goals to be achieved. Hydrogen pilot facilities, hybrid systems, hydrogen conversion technologies, microgrids, and thermal storage are all energy areas that Capstone is currently pursuing.
